By the time of Pride 11 in October of 2000, Japanese fighter Kazushi Sakuraba had grown into the biggest star in the Pride Fighting Championships, having defeated three members of the legendary Gracie family along with a host of other opponents, many of whom held significant size and weight advantages over him. Thus, although Pride 11 featured a somewhat lackluster undercard, Sakuraba, who defeated Shannon Ritch with an Achilles Hold at 1:06 of the first round, comfortably handled the headlining spot.
